This past summer the music, movies, and fashion of the 1980’s invaded a new Netflix sci-fi drama, Stranger Things. A small town in Indiana becomes terrified with the mysterious vanishing of a young boy named Will Byers. As citizens band together to help develop Byers’ disappearance, they discover that there is something more going on than a simple disappearance. During their search, Byer’s friends, Dustin, Mike, and Lucas find a telekinetic girl, Eleven, who knew where Will Byers had gone. The boys trust her in hopes of find their missing friend. Stranger Things features iconic 80s and 90s actors like, Winona Ryder and Matthew Modine. It also introduces new actors, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, and Noah Schnapp. Teenagers around the country “admire” Millie Bobby Brown’s character, Eleven. Alarms blare and lights flash as a scientist appears frantically running to enter an elevator. The man sighs of relief, thinking he’s in a safe place. As the elevator doors close, something growls. The man looks up, realizing that he’s fallen into a trap, the unknown creature takes his next victim. A group of twelve year olds play Dungeons and Dragons. The game intensifies as the host, Mike Wheeler (Finn Wolfhard), sets down the Demogorgon. Lucas Conley (Caleb McLaughlin), Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo), and Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) try to figure out their next move as Karen Wheeler interrupts the boys, and are forced to go home. As the boys part their ways, Will Byers is found riding his bike alone in a dark street. The unknown creature appears and freaks Byers. He runs into the woods to take a shortcut home. He makes it home but as he gets to the garage, the lights go off and he’s gone. After being rejected more than a dozen times by other Hollywood studios, Matt and Ross Duffer, The Duffer Brothers, finally felt at ease when Netflix picked up Stranger Things. Inspired by directors, Steven Spielberg, David Fincher, and John Carter, the Duffer Brothers aimed to capture the nostalgic authentic style of filmmaking on television screens. “We knew it would appeal to the people who grew up like us loving these movies from the 80s and, what we were hoping and praying was that it would also work for a newer, younger generation,” Matt said in an interview with CNN. “The show recaptured 80s filmmaking and took it to a whole other level ”. There are eight hour long episodes that develop the mystery of Will Byers. Throughout the show, relationships are built, destroyed, and some end up dying. The show and its actors have become such a hit, the production has been nominated for 6 pending awards. The nominations include, Best Main Title, Best Original Score, Best Drama Series, Favorite TV Show, Favorite Premium Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show, and Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy Actress. The Netflix original, Stranger Things, was one of the best shows this year. The show was full of mystery, unexpected twists, and some light comedy relief. Everything a horror sci-fi show could want it had, with its inter dimensional monsters, corrupt government, and children with superpowers. The characters and the trials they faced managed to grip the viewers along with them. The show ended on a cliffhanger and I hope that the second season can live up to this season.
